Our Finishes

Every Studio Ore product is finished by hand, a process we have refined over time to achieve distinctive surface finishes without relying on PVD coatings or toxic chrome plating. Working exclusively with solid brass, we offer three types of finish applications: living finishes that develop character over time, lacquered finishes that maintain their appearance, and painted finishes that can be customised to match your designs.

Living Finishes

These are finishes which are not protected by lacquer. They include natural polished brass and brass with chemical treatment (hand-dipped) to change its tone, such as bronze or aged iron. These finishes can also be protected with wax, which limits ageing and gives a different, less uniform look to a lacquer. Unlacquered brass will gain a beautiful patina as it ages, whilst bronze and aged iron will show signs of use, revealing the natural brass on edges and surfaces worn by human touch.

Lacquered Finishes

Our lacquered finishes take our living finishes and coat them with a hard-wearing matte lacquer. This means the brass, bronze and other finishes maintain their tone over time. Whilst these products have protection, they are not as hard wearing as PVD, so some care is needed in their maintenance and cleaning.

Painted Finishes

Painted applications are solid, opaque finishes that change the brass's colour entirely. They are hard wearing and do not change their tone over time, meaning a painted finish is a consistent choice that will provide the perfect colour match for your design aesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Unlacquered finishes?

An unlacquered finish is left untreated, allowing the material to develop a natural patina over time. This evolving surface adds depth and character to your metalwork, enhancing its appearance with age and continued use. It is ideal for those who appreciate the organic transformation and character it will develop.

How are Lacquered finishes achieved?

A lacquered finish is applied as a protective coating to preserve the material's original look, ensuring it remains free from oxidation and patina development over time. The lacquer is carefully hand-applied to the surface, forming a durable, transparent layer that seals the metal beneath. This process is designed to lock in the finish's aesthetic, maintaining its appearance while offering long-term protection from environmental factors such as moisture, air, and handling.

The lacquered coating acts as a barrier, preventing tarnishing, discoloration, and wear, making it especially ideal for high-use areas like kitchens and bathrooms. The process involves applying a clear lacquer that bonds with the metal surface, ensuring it remains stable and resistant to staining, scratching, and corrosion. Once cured, the lacquer provides a smooth, consistent finish that preserves the material's natural beauty while requiring minimal upkeep.

This finish not only helps maintain the original appearance of the material but also makes cleaning and maintenance easier, as the sealed surface prevents buildup of oils and dirt. For those who prefer the longevity of a polished or aged appearance without the concerns of natural wear, lacquered finishes offer a low-maintenance solution that ensures the product remains visually appealing for years to come.

How can I preserve my finish?

Each of our unlacquered finishes, except for our Polished Brass, Brushed Brass, Aged Brass and Weathered Bronze is provided with a light, natural wax coating that will limit the potential for ageing or patina while the product is in transit. Upon use, the wax layer will naturally deteriorate, exposing the finish. If you wish to preserve your finish, we recommend opting for a lacquered finish or applying a light coating of quality wax to your product at regular intervals, in line with the chosen product's instructions.

What finish is suitable for a commercial or outdoor environment?

We are able to offer a 'double lacquer' on our finishes, which creates an even more durable protective layer on your chosen product. This bespoke option supports the use of our products in high-footfall commercial spaces and in some outdoor regions. Please ensure you speak to our expert team about this, to ensure that your chosen finish is suitable for the application, before placing your order with us.
