Are brass taps durable?

Brass gets better with time. Which is why we use it to make every Studio Ore piece. And we're only interested in materials that last. It’s an alloy of copper and zinc. Copper adds warmth, and zinc makes it more resistant to wear. It has a density of 8.5 grams per cubic centimetre, giving it a reassuring weight in the hand.

It works well for taps and hardware because it’s strong, won't corrode, and won't rust. It'll withstand the needs of a busy bathroom or kitchen.

How unlacquered brass evolves over time

Unlacquered brass is a living finish. There's no protective coating. So over time, it darkens where water flows, lightens where touched most. It's what we like about it. Brass gains a patina that adds character to the room.

Unlacquered brass ages when its copper content meets oxygen. And the patina takes time to become visible. We have no say in how or when it appears. Living finishes respond to the surroundings. It all depends on the atmosphere inside the house, moisture levels, how much it’s handled, how it’s cared for, and even the tone of the finish itself. No two pieces of brass will age the same. Brass does what brass does. It’s not damage, just chemistry.

Our lacquered finishes do have a protective layer. The same brass, sealed with a matt or shiny coating. It preserves the original look, the surface won't change.

Neither a living nor lacquered finish is more durable than the other. It just depends on the look you want now and years from now.

How to care for brass fittings

Brass fittings in living or lacquered finishes are durable, but not entirely resistant to wear. And maintenance matters. How you care for brass affects how it ages. It doesn't need constant care. Simply clean the surface regularly with a soft cloth and pH-neutral soap. Then dry with another soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. This can scratch and stain the surface. See our full care guides specific to each finish here.

Only use a high-quality metal polish if your finish is unlacquered polished brass. This removes any signs of ageing, bringing it back to day one. Or leave the piece to patinate naturally. The choice is yours.
